Tetney Marshes
RSPB coastal saltmarsh near Humberston Fitties, with birdwatching and a sea-wall walk towards Horseshoe Point.
About Tetney Marshes
Tetney Marshes offers one of the most peaceful and wildlife-rich outings near Cleethorpes. The coastal landscape beyond Humberston Fitties includes saltmarsh, lagoons and exposed estuary mudflats, providing valuable habitat for birds throughout the year. It's ideal for visitors who prefer open landscapes and nature to conventional seaside attractions.
Birdwatchers can look for species such as brent geese, redshanks and plovers, particularly as migration and winter bring changing bird populations to the estuary. The wider marshes are associated with the RSPB, and the setting is best appreciated quietly from established walking routes without entering sensitive habitats.
A public path follows the sea wall from the Humberston Fitties area towards Horseshoe Point, with the option of a longer walk towards Horseshoe Point of around four miles one way. The route offers long views over the Humber, sandbanks and shifting tides. Parking has historically been available near the Fitties entrance; check access and any gate closing times before leaving your vehicle.
This is an exposed coastal environment with limited facilities. There are no guaranteed cafés or toilets on the marsh itself, so bring water, suitable footwear and weather protection. Keep dogs on leads near wildlife, stay on marked paths and never walk out onto the mudflats or saltmarsh. Plan around the tide and check conditions if walking a longer stretch.
