Ross Castle

Victorian folly built in 1885 beside Pier Gardens. Garden access is currently closed for renovations, with reopening expected in 2027.

About Ross Castle

Ross Castle is a Victorian stone folly overlooking the Cleethorpes seafront near Pier Gardens. Despite its romantic name, it is not a medieval fortress: the structure was built in **1885** for the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company and named after railway secretary Edward Ross. Its castellated walls make it one of the resort's most distinctive historic landmarks and part of the story of Cleethorpes' growth into a Victorian holiday destination.

**Current access notice (October 2026):** Pier Gardens are fully closed for major renovation, including the paths leading into the gardens from Central Promenade. Access to Ross Castle through the gardens is unavailable while the works take place, and hoardings may block views. Please stay outside the fenced construction site and follow pedestrian diversions. North East Lincolnshire Council currently expects the Pier Gardens regeneration to finish in 2027; check https://www.nelincs.gov.uk/business-and-investment/investment-and-regeneration/cleethorpes-developments/pier-gardens/ for the latest access information.

You may be able to glimpse the landmark from public areas around the seafront, depending on temporary fencing and works. In the meantime, the pier and other open parts of the promenade provide places to enjoy Cleethorpes' coastal outlook.
