Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway
Take a scenic ride along Cleethorpes seafront on one of Britain's oldest seaside miniature railways. The Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway runs heritage steam and diesel trains between Lakeside and Kingsway, with activities and refreshments at the stations.
About Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway
Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway has been carrying seaside visitors since 1948 and remains one of the town's most distinctive family attractions. The 15-inch-gauge railway uses miniature steam and diesel locomotives to take passengers on a leisurely journey through the southern end of Cleethorpes, offering something for train enthusiasts, children and anyone looking for a different way to enjoy the coast.
A return journey covers approximately two miles and takes around 30 minutes. Setting off from Lakeside Station near Cleethorpes Boating Lake, the route winds through the lakeside area, crosses a viaduct and follows the coastal setting towards Kingsway Station by the Southern Promenade and Cleethorpes Leisure Centre. There are open and covered passenger carriages, so visitors can enjoy the coastal air when the weather is good or choose some shelter on cooler days. The type of locomotive operating varies by the day.
Lakeside is the railway's main station and a good starting point for a longer visit. Here you'll find the Sidings Snack Shack for food, drinks and ice cream, along with the nine-hole crazy golf course. Younger visitors can also look out for the small drive-your-own tram attraction, which is intended for children under ten. Next to the station is the Signal Box Inn, widely known for its unusually tiny interior, a favourite stop for adults who fancy a drink while the family enjoys the surrounding attractions. Check the individual facilities' current opening times before travelling.
At the Kingsway end, passengers are close to the beach, promenade and Cleethorpes Leisure Centre. The station has a railway gift shop selling souvenirs, making it a convenient stop for anyone interested in the engines or looking for a small memento of their visit. The line is more than a ride in its own right: it also links the Boating Lake area with the seafront, so you can combine it with walking, family activities and other things to do in Cleethorpes.
The railway runs a changing timetable with themed operating days and occasional special events, including steam and diesel weekends. Don't assume the same frequency or type of train runs every day: check the official online calendar for operating dates and departure times. Tickets are available for single and return journeys, and the railway also offers family-friendly extras and seasonal passes. Children under two currently travel free, while dogs are permitted subject to a small fare. It is a cashless attraction, so bring a payment card or another accepted contactless method. Always check the official fares page for current prices.
Accessibility is taken into account, with a specially adapted carriage able to accommodate wheelchairs or mobility scooters on most trains; the railway advises visitors with mobility requirements to contact the team in advance. Toilet facilities are available at Lakeside, and group and school visits can be arranged. Because the ride uses heritage rolling stock, it's worth confirming the suitable service and boarding arrangements before arrival.
Getting there by car is straightforward. Lakeside Station is on Kings Road, Cleethorpes, DN35 0AG, with a large paid car park beside the station and the Boating Lake. Kingsway Station, DN35 0BY, is further along Kings Road by the Leisure Centre and also has a pay-and-display car park nearby. Stagecoach routes 8, 9 and 10 run along Kings Road, and Kingsway is within walking distance of central Cleethorpes and the pier area.
For a family day out, pair the railway with Cleethorpes Boating Lake, the nearby nature and walking areas or the beach. You can plan a short train ride or spend longer enjoying the golf, refreshments and surroundings. Visit the railway's official website for the latest timetable, fares, event programme and accessibility information, or contact the team directly if you have a particular question.
