Council guidance · October 2026
No dogs between Wonderland Rock Groyne and Cleethorpes Leisure Centre from Good Friday through 30 September inclusive.
After 30 September until the next Good Friday, dogs are permitted on the main beach, subject to current signs and other rules. Good Friday changes date each year.
The council states a £100 fine for breaching the PSPO.
South of the Leisure Centre towards Humberston Fitties, dogs are welcome year-round. Head south along the seafront and use signed beach access, checking tides and conditions first.
Stay clear of sensitive saltmarsh habitats and nesting or resting birds. Year-round access does not override wildlife protections or on-site restrictions.
The official boundaries

A little preparation
Strong tides, mud and sandbanks can catch walkers out. Never follow a dog onto distant sandbanks. There are no beach lifeguards. In a coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
Check Cleethorpes tide predictionsKeep your dog under control and follow promenade and park lead signs. Bring bags, clear up every time and use appropriate bins; take waste away if a bin is unavailable. Give birds space and keep out of sensitive reserves.
Bring drinking water and avoid hot sand and pavements that can burn paws. Never leave a dog in a hot car. The council lists a free dog-water fountain at the Resort Hub on Central Promenade; bring your own supply too.

Choose the southern beach or a change of scenery inland. Follow marked routes and local lead rules; dog-friendly never means unrestricted access.

Local know-how
By Visit Cleethorpes. Our in-depth guide, with sources and venue-specific advice. Policies can change; check before visiting.
Whether it’s a breezy walk along the seafront or a weekend away, Cleethorpes is a great place to explore with your dog. With open coastal views, parkland walks, independent cafés and plenty of places to pause, you can plan a proper day out without leaving your four-legged companion behind.
The one thing worth knowing before you set off is that the main beach has seasonal dog restrictions. Here’s how to enjoy Cleethorpes responsibly, where to walk and which local places to look up along the way.
Yes - but where you can go depends on the time of year. Between Good Friday and 30 September inclusive, dogs must not go onto the main resort beach between Wonderland Rock Groyne and Cleethorpes Leisure Centre.
This is an enforced council Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), and the council states that breaches may result in a £100 fine. It’s worth checking the signs at beach entrances, rather than guessing where the boundary lies. View the council’s official dog-exclusion map (PDF).
From 1 October until the following Good Friday, dogs are once again permitted on the main resort beach, subject to other local rules and signs. That makes autumn and winter particularly enjoyable for a quieter stroll with a dog.
If you're visiting during the warmer months, don't worry: there is still a lovely stretch of sand that welcomes dogs all year.
The beach south of Cleethorpes Leisure Centre towards Humberston Fitties is dog-friendly all year round, according to North East Lincolnshire Council. This is the simplest option when you want to walk on the sand with your dog during the seasonal restriction.
The surroundings feel a little different from the busier central seafront, with long views across the Humber and a more open coastal landscape. Take a look at Fitties Beach when planning where to start.
Keep dogs under close control, be considerate of other beach users, and stay away from sensitive wildlife and saltmarsh habitats. The estuary is important for feeding and resting birds. A lead is often the sensible choice where wildlife is present, and any on-site restrictions take priority.
Important beach safety: Cleethorpes has fast-moving tides, mud and sandbanks, and there are no lifeguards on the beach. Never follow a dog towards distant exposed sandbanks. Before heading down, check Cleethorpes tide predictions, obey warning signs and read our visitor beach-safety advice.
This is our pick if your main aim is sand, sea air and a relaxed dog walk. The dog-friendly stretch beyond the leisure centre can be enjoyed throughout the year. Choose a route to suit the weather and tide, and keep away from the delicate natural areas.
Explore Fitties Beach.
Prefer grassy paths to sandy paws? Cleethorpes Country Park offers lake views, green space and an easy change of scenery from the promenade. It's a pleasant option for a gentle stroll, particularly when the main beach is restricted.
Be mindful of other visitors and wildlife around the lake. Check on-site signs for lead requirements, and never assume every area is suitable for off-lead exercise.
A little further inland, Weelsby Woods has tree-lined paths and open parkland that feel quite different from the coast. It’s useful on windy days when you’d prefer a more sheltered walk.
Whichever route you choose, take water and poo bags, watch for other dogs and families, and follow local signage.
There’s no shortage of places for a coffee or a bite to eat after a walk. Here are a few local options worth knowing about. Dog policies can change, including which rooms or outside areas are available, so always double-check before you head in.
Darracotte’s, on the Promenade, is particularly helpful for dog owners: its own website says its Promenade Room welcomes customers with dogs, with fresh water and treats available. The Beach Room and roof terrace are dog-free, so it’s easy to choose the right space. A great option for a coffee after a walk along the front.
Suzie’s Cup of Joy has long been mentioned among Cleethorpes’ dog-friendly café choices. Pop in for a drink or a sweet treat, but check the current dog seating policy before visiting.
Blend Coffee & Bar is another central stop that has appeared on local dog-friendly lists. It’s handy if you’re exploring the independent shops and cafés around Market Street.
For a traditional seafront café stop, Browns Café is worth considering. Its promenade setting makes it convenient during a coastal stroll; check which seating areas welcome dogs.
The Helm on Kingsway and Kingsway Kiosks have also been named in local dog-friendly round-ups. They offer additional options as you head along the seafront, though policies and opening arrangements may vary.
Several of these names appear in the 2025 local dog-friendly venue guide. We recommend checking with each venue for current details.
If one beach walk isn't enough, stay a little longer. One local option is Sea Cottage, a dog-friendly cottage in Cleethorpes that gives you a comfortable base for exploring the town and coast.
Not every hotel or holiday property accepts pets, and some accommodation has limits or additional charges. Always confirm the dog policy directly before booking. You can also browse more places to stay in Cleethorpes.
Dogs are not allowed between Wonderland Rock Groyne and Cleethorpes Leisure Centre from Good Friday to 30 September inclusive. The section south of the leisure centre towards Humberston Fitties remains dog-friendly all year.
Yes. The main resort beach restriction ends after 30 September each year, so from 1 October dogs can use the central beach again, subject to other restrictions and signage.
The southern beach towards Humberston Fitties is a great option, as are suitable marked paths at Cleethorpes Country Park and Weelsby Woods. Always respect on-site dog and wildlife rules.
Several are, although rules differ by venue and seating area. Darracotte's specifically advertises a dog-friendly Promenade Room; for other places, check before visiting.
Sea Cottage is one dog-friendly option. For any accommodation, confirm restrictions, maximum numbers and potential extra charges directly.
Bring your dog, take the scenic route and enjoy the best of Cleethorpes at your own pace. Start by checking the official council dog-beach guidance, and explore more visitor information before your trip.
